The Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Journal Collection offers an annual award for newly published research or thinking that has been recognized to be outstanding by members of the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Research Network.

The winning article is selected from the ten highest-ranked articles emerging from the peer review process. The author(s) are invited to be a featured speaker at the next conference, where they are also acknowledged in a short presentation.

Award Winner for Volume 18

Traumatropic Nuclear Communities and Memories: The Works of Monika Niwelińska

The aim of this paper is to analyze the concept of traumatropic nuclear community understood as community of shared physical location and collective experimentation. This concept is analyzed with reference to the works of the Polish photo artist Monika Niwelińska, who explores the process of losing memory and restoring it. Drawing on the concepts of necrocene and traumatropism, the paper argues that Niwelińska’s works constitute a curvature or growth on history, and thus fit in with the discursive sense of the apocalypse.

The article published in The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences explores the concept of traumatropic nuclear community and marks the inception of several subsequent articles focusing on nuclear memory in art. This article constitutes a significant contribution to my ongoing research in nuclear memory studies. Following its publication, additional texts and conference presentations were generated, and I also became a member of an international group dedicated to this topic. The exploration initiated by this article has paved the way for further scholarly inquiries into the domain of nuclear memory. I firmly assert that this subject remains relevant and timely, given ongoing conflicts and ecological threats, thereby underscoring the importance of nuclear memory studies in contemporary discourse.
