Our Position & Our Model

Common Ground Research Networks believes firmly in the principles of sustainable knowledge production and accessible knowledge. We also have a commitment to our Research Network members to be engaged in the current trends in the publishing industry. Common Ground Open is one such engagement. Common Ground Open offers our authors the ability to make their articles freely available, upon publication, in our subscription based journals. It also enables authors to satisfy a variety of trending needs—institutional repositories, academic evaluative criteria, research grants, and academic funding—all of these are often insistent or dependent on published content being free, accessible, and open. When publishing open access is a funding stipulation, Common Ground Open offers the publishing solution.

The standard cost of open access in the publishing industry often excludes authors from open access opportunities. Our standard rate of $250 reflects our position that publishing does require skilled labor, but we must keep open access affordable to provide greater opportunities for authors and their audiences. Our open access publications are licensed using the Creative Commons license, “Attribution-Non-Commercial-No-Derivatives 4.0 International” (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).

Common Ground Open

Aligning with our mission, works published using Hybrid Open Access are free to download from the CG Scholar webstore. All of the Common Ground Research Networks open access journal articles are available in one central location—Common Ground Open. This dedicated space is accessible to open access listing organizations and aggregators. All Hybrid Open Access content is also actively promoted across all of our Research Networks.

Open Access Options

Hybrid Open Access

Traditional open access journals are subsidized by academic institutions, foundations, or government agencies. A newer generation of open access journals charge authors significant publication fees. Our open access approach is called Hybrid Open Access—a model increasingly offered by both university presses and well-known commercial publishers. However, we have attempted to keep the cost of this option at an affordable level.

In the Hybrid Open Access model, some articles are available at no charge (“open access”) to anyone searching the web, while the remainder are available only to subscribers. Authors pay a modest fee for the open access option. By publishing in our journals, your article is already available to a large number of scholars who have individual subscriptions or whose institutions subscribe. However, making your article open access will allow your work to reach an even wider audience, broadening the dissemination of your research, and increasing the incidence of other scholars citing your work.

Individual Author

Single Article $250 USD

Institutional Open Access

With Institutional Open Access, institutions pay a set annual fee that entitles their students and faculty to publish a given number of open access articles in our peer reviewed academic journals. Both the authors and the institution then enjoy significant additional visibility for their work, and have the right to distribute freely their final typeset articles. One additional benefit of this approach is that the rights to the article remain with the subscribing institution. Both the author and the institution can share the final typeset version of the article in any place they wish, including institutional repositories, personal websites, and privately or publicly accessible course materials.

The annual Institutional Open Access fee covers the costs for a given number of faculty or students from an institution to publish, following successful peer review. Articles can be published in any of our scholarly journals.

5 Articles $1,125 USD
10 Articles $2,250 USD
15 Articles $3,375 USD

Open Access Publication Agreement: Journal Article

In conjunction with the terms of the Journal Publication Agreement, this document amends and/or affirms the copyright terms of Section II in that agreement to allow for open access publication. For a fee of $250 USD, an author can choose the open access option at any time before or after publication. In the case that an author arranges for open access publication before accepting the Journal Publication Agreement, this document affirms the terms for “Open Access” publication as listed under Section II of that agreement. In the case that an author arranges for open access publication after having accepted the Journal Publication Agreement and the “Traditional” publication model, as listed under Section II of that agreement, then this document serves to amend the previous publication terms, as listed under Section II of that agreement, to allow for “Open Access” publication adhering to the rights and stipulations listed therein.

Under the Common Ground Research Networks open access publication option, works are made freely available in electronic format in Common Ground’s online bookstore. Common Ground’s open access publications are protected with Some Rights Reserved as Public Licensed Material, available under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Public License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). Archiving and SHERPA/RoMEO

Under Hybrid Open Access, works are made freely available in electronic format.

Open Access Archiving Permissions

Authors with open access articles can archive pre-print and post-print versions of a work; they can even archive the publisher's version/PDF. Unlike some open access models, Common Ground's Hybrid Open Access has no embargo period preventing an author from archiving. Find out more about our archiving policies for Open Access and Traditional publication using the link below. Our traditional publications are listed as SHERPA/RoMEO Yellow.
