Any previously binding agreements with an agency, your employer, or any other commissioning party hold precedence over the author’s copyright from Common Ground Publishing and are equally bound to the same copyright limitations as the author(s) as specified in the Publishing Agreement.
Under the traditional publishing agreement option, the author(s) grant Common Ground Publishing an exclusive international license to publish the work in all formats. Publication by any entity other than Common Ground Publishing must be pre-approved through a reprint agreement with Common Ground Publishing. The author(s) may make complimentary electronic or printed copies of the work for classes that they teach. They may also post a copy of the non-typeset version of the work to a closed, institution-only repository. In all cases, the work must be accompanied by a full citation. The author(s) and coauthor(s) may not post Publisher’s Version/PDF of the work to commercial repositories such as academia.edu or ResearchGate. They may post the title, the abstract, and a link to the Common Ground Publishing bookstore on these or any other websites.
1. Author(s) may archive Pre-print (before peer review) materials in the repository of their choice without restriction.
2. Author(s) may archive Post-print materials (after peer review) following these conditions:
1. Author(s) may use the Pre-print (before peer review) materials on a personal website without restriction.
2. Author(s) may only republish Post-print in a noncommercial book written or edited by the contributing author(s).
3. Only title, keywords, and abstract of the Post-print may appear on the website of the author(s) institution or the author(s) personal website, and must link to Common Ground Publishing’s bookstore.
1. Author(s) may supply Publisher’s Version/PDF to students/use the article for teaching purposes.
2. Author(s) may supply the Publisher’s Version/PDF to a research colleague at an academic institution.
3. Author(s) may supply the Publisher’s Version/PDF to authorities for institutional funding evaluations and rankings (such as the RAE).
Under the Common Ground Publishing open access option, works are made freely available in electronic format in Common Ground Publishing’s online bookstore. Authors may reproduce and distribute the work in any noncommercial format, provided the original work is properly cited. The open access option does not include publication in any commercial format; commercial use must be preapproved through a reprint agreement with Common Ground Publishing.
1. Authors with Open Access articles can archive Pre-print and Post-print.
2. Publisher's version/PDF may be used.
3. There is no embargo that prevents an author from archiving.

Q1: What is an exclusive license agreement?
A: With an exclusive license you retain copyright. Your work is credited as © The Author(s) but you license the control of all rights exclusively to Common Ground Publishing. This means that all licensing requests including permissions are managed by Common Ground Publishing.
Q2: Why does Common Ground Publishing require an exclusive license agreement?
A: Common Ground Publishing seeks to bring your article to the widest possible readership. An exclusive license helps ensure adequate protection against infringement of copyright protected material through breach of copyright or piracy anywhere in the world. It also ensures that requests by third parties to reprint or reproduce all or part of a work in any format are handled efficiently in accordance with general policy which encourages dissemination of knowledge inside the framework of copyright.
Q3: Who owns the copyright to my work?
A: If you have written your work yourself, or with coauthors, and you have not been commissioned to write the work by someone else (either by a government agency, your employer, or any other party) you (and any coauthors) will hold the copyright to your work’s content.
Q4: What if I have coauthors contributing to this work?
A: If there is more than one author of this work, we request that you, as the nominated author, accept the Publishing Agreement on behalf of all coauthors. You must ensure that you have their consent to submit the work for publication and that you have the right to sign the Publishing Agreement on their behalf. Or, if they prefer, you may all sign one copy of the form before returning it.
Q5: What are my re-use rights as author?
A: It is important to check the Publishing Agreement to establish your rights as author. Common Ground Publishing’s standard policies allow the following re-use rights:
Q6: May I re-use material from another source in my article?
A: Yes, so long as it follows “fair use” or “fair dealing” guidelines. The author(s) must ensure it does not infringe on anyone else’s copyright.
Q7: Can I submit the published version of my article to the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)?
A: Yes, you may submit the published version of your article to authorities for institutional fundings, evaluations, and rankings.
Q8: Is there any article use or re-use that does not require permission from Common Ground Publishing?
A: Yes, please see Section III of the Rights and Permissions.
Q9: How can I contact the Rights and Permissions department at Common Ground Publishing?
Q10: May I post the Publisher’s Version/PDF of a work to commercial repositories such as academia.edu or ResearchGate?
A: This is only allowed if the work has been made open access using our Hybrid Open Access option. For additional information on Hybrid Open Access.
