Overview

Welcome to Human-Centered AI Transformations Research Network—an initiative that aims to harness the power of artificial intelligence to positively shape our world while keeping human values at the core. Our vision is to advance the development and application of AI technologies that prioritize human well-being, autonomy, equity, and transparency. By placing people first, we ensure that AI serves as a supportive partner in enhancing lives, while advocating for collaboration between humans and AI. We give people an active role in this collaboration, ensuring they are not passive recipients of AI outputs but rather empowered participants in shaping and directing AI's contributions.

Our Scope

The scope of Human-Centered AI focuses on various domains where AI can make significant impacts, including:

Education: Supporting personalized, inclusive learning environments.

Research: Building new and improved processes for understanding the human and natural worlds.

Publishing: Developing new tools in support of knowledge development, validation, and dissemination.

Workplace Training: Enhancing employee skills through personalized learning and adaptive training programs.

Arts: Enabling new forms of creative expression and supporting artists with generative tools.

Business: Driving efficiency, improving decision-making, and supporting customer engagement through AI-powered insights.

Healthcare: Delivering personalized care, enhancing diagnostics, and improving patient outcomes.

Law: Assisting with legal research, improving case management, and supporting fair and transparent decision-making.

At the same time, the consortium will investigate the grave dangers associated with AI:

Intellectual Property: illegal appropriation of copyrighted content and unjust appropriation of content from the public domain for private profit.

Employment: automation that eliminates labour-intensive knowledge economy jobs at all levels of the labour market, from customer service to the professions.

False Facts and Fake News: machine “hallucinations”, human-prompted propaganda and social division, impersonation of individual persons.

AI Bias: the propagation through AI of racism, sexism and other ideologies of inequality.

AI Divides: differential access to AI as an added dimension to social inequalities.

Explainability: allowing AI to be an inscrutable agent when its basic mechanics and limits are explainable in a program of AI literacy

Objectives

Our objective is to bring together humanities, social sciences, education, law, and computer science experts. This cross-disciplinary collaboration aims to address key questions such as: What are the threats and opportunities AI poses to the rule of law, personal autonomy, social solidarity, and fundamental rights? How can AI infrastructures be designed to enhance transparency, explainability, and serve the public good? How can AI and eXtended Reality be effectively utilized in teaching? What are the risks and benefits of automating intellectual and cultural work, and what impact does this have on knowledge and cultural economies? How can AI help reduce social division and inequality while supporting local, regional, and national autonomy in alignment with pan-EU civic values? And what holistic measures of social, economic, and technological progress are needed?

By fostering international collaboration, including partners across the EU and beyond, Human-Centered AI Transformations Research Network aims to create a future where digital innovation aligns with ethical principles. Together, we strive to build AI systems that empower individuals, support democratic values, and address challenges like bias, inequality, and privacy. This commitment to responsible AI development ensures that technological advancements serve the common good and foster a more inclusive and sustainable society.
