Exploring the foundations, methods, and social contexts of design.

The Design Principles & Practices Research Network brings together a global community of scholars, practitioners, educators, and researchers exploring the meaning, purpose, and transformative potential of design. Member-based and scholar-led, the Network bridges creative practice, critical theory, and professional application across disciplines.

Our Platforms

Founded in 2007, the Network established a space for designers, educators, and theorists to explore how design shapes—and is shaped by—the cultures, technologies, and systems within which it operates. Over nearly two decades, it has become a leading interdisciplinary platform for advancing the role of design in knowledge production and social innovation.

Annual Conference:

The International Conference on Design Principles & Practices convenes annually with a new host institution, providing a space for cross-disciplinary exchange. Previous hosts include Universitat Politècnica de València, Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, ELISAVA Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Sapienza University of Rome, among others.

Journal Collection:

The Design Principles and Practices Journal Collection publishes research examining design’s theoretical foundations and practical implications.

Book Imprint:

The Design Principles & Practices Book Imprint publishes monographs and edited volumes that explore design’s role as a form of inquiry, intervention, and social practice—bridging research with applied creativity.

Leadership

The Network is co-chaired by Prof. Lorenzo Imbesi and Dr. Loredana Di Lucchio, both of Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy. Their leadership reflects the Network’s dual commitment to design theory and design practice—bridging academic rigor with creative experimentation and cross-cultural collaboration.

Partners & Collaborators

Partnerships extend the Network’s member-based, scholar-led mission—linking universities, design schools, cultural institutions, and professional organizations that share our commitment to advancing design knowledge and practice. Through these collaborations, the conference, our journals, and our book imprint form a continuous, global conversation on design as both inquiry and application.
