Exploring the intersections of design, ecology, and human experience.

The Constructed Environment Research Network examines the social, ecological, and material dimensions of the built world. Member-based and scholar-led, the Network connects architects, urbanists, designers, and researchers working to understand how environments are shaped—and how they, in turn, shape us.

Our Platforms

Founded in 2010, the Constructed Environment Research Network began as a forum for exploring the relationships between architecture, design, and sustainability. It has grown into a global community of scholars, practitioners, and educators engaged in rethinking how human constructions mediate the interactions between the natural and the social worlds.

Annual Conference:

The International Conference on the Constructed Environment is held each year in partnership with a leading university or cultural institution. The conference brings together architects, planners, designers, and researchers to present work on design, materiality, and the ethics of inhabitation.

Journal:

The International Journal of Architectonic, Spatial, and Environmental Design publishes peer-reviewed research on human configurations of the environment and the interactions among the constructed, social, and natural realms.

Book Imprint:

The Constructed Environment Book Imprint publishes monographs and edited volumes advancing interdisciplinary perspectives on architecture, planning, and design—linking theoretical inquiry with professional practice and environmental responsibility.

Online Community

The Constructed Environment Research Network extends beyond the annual conference through its digital community on CGScholar, a collaborative research platform developed by Common Ground Media Lab. Using the Community App and the Knowledge Experience (KX) ecosystem, members share profiles, discuss research, and connect conference, journal, and book activities within one integrated system—making the Network a living, year-round scholarly environment.
