The Constructed Environment Research Network was founded in 2010 with its inaugural conference at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice, Italy, establishing a space for architects, planners, designers, and scholars to examine the interrelations between built form, human experience, and environmental systems. Since then, the conference has traveled to institutions including the University Center Chicago, UBC Robson Square (Vancouver), Universidade Nova de Lisboa in partnership with the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Arizona, Cracow University of Technology, Wayne State University, Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimarães), University of California, Berkeley, University of Calgary, University of Monterrey, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, University of Vienna, and HTW Berlin – Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin. Each host has contributed to a globally networked conversation on design, sustainability, and spatial justice.
Throughout its history, the Network has featured distinguished and emerging voices shaping the discourse on the built environment. Plenary speakers have included David Mayernik, Kathryn H. Anthony, Jeffery S. Poss, Aaron Levy, Ryan E. Smith, Bing Thom, Beatrice Galilee, Sally Harrison, Winka Dubbeldam, Tiago Mota Saraiva, and Sarah Wigglesworth, among others—each offering insight into how design and urban form express the values and aspirations of their time.
