Sustainable and Inclusive Open Access

Common Ground supports sustainable and inclusive Open Access models that make research more visible and equitable. While some journals are fully Gold Open Access, most operate as Hybrid Open Access (HOA), giving authors flexible pathways that fit their goals and resources. The CGScholar platform extends these values by creating a trusted environment for collaboration, visibility, and the long-term preservation of the scholarly record.

Our Position

We are committed to advancing sustainable, inclusive models of open scholarly communication. We fully support the principles of open and accessible research and collaborate with authors, institutions, funders, and libraries to promote transparency, equity, and the responsible dissemination of knowledge.

While some of our journals are published as fully Gold Open Access, the majority operate under a Hybrid Open Access (HOA) model, offering flexible options to meet the diverse needs of researchers worldwide. Authors may select their preferred access pathway during the Rights Agreement phase and revise this choice at any time after publication.

Hybrid journals are subscription-based while offering per-article open access options to align with various funding requirements. Authors may choose from three rights agreement options: All Rights Reserved (+ Green Open Access), Open Access (CC-BY-NC-ND), and Gold Open Access (CC-BY).

Gold Open Access journals are free to view online without subscription fees. Gold Open Access (CC-BY) is the only rights agreement option for journals in this pathway.

Our approach emphasizes accessibility, affordability, and sustainability. Through our membership model, authors receive CGScholar Points that can be applied toward Open Access publication costs, ensuring that equitable access remains achievable across career stages and regions. Members also receive additional discounts on publication fees, reflecting our not-for-profit commitment to reinvesting in the infrastructure of scholarship.

Open Access publication offers significant benefits—increased visibility, broader readership, and greater citation potential—extending the impact of research across disciplines and communities. Through the CGScholar platform, we provide a trusted and participatory environment for digital scholarship that democratizes access while sustaining the long-term integrity of the scholarly record.

All Rights Reserved

(+ Green Open Access)

Under the traditional All Rights Reserved publishing agreement, the author(s) grant Common Ground Research Networks an exclusive international license to publish the work in all formats. The author(s) may make complimentary electronic or printed copies of the work for the classes they teach. They may archive an Author’s Original (AO) without any restriction. The author(s) also, immediately upon acceptance, is permitted to submit the Accepted Manuscript (AM) version with a CC-BY license or a CC-BY-NC-ND license, if required, to their funding body or institution for inclusion in their funding body or institution's database, archive, or designated repository. This is the version of the paper accepted for publication after changes resulting from peer review but before editing, formatting, and production of the final PDF by CGRN staff. Before depositing the AM to a repository, the author(s) is asked to insert the following statement on the title page and in the acknowledgments of the manuscript: "This manuscript was accepted for publication in [JOURNAL NAME] on [insert date]." In this model, the author(s) is not allowed to copy, distribute, or transmit the Final Published Version (FPV).
