Nwabisa Mehlomakulu is a senior lecturer in the Department of Consumer and Food Sciences at the University of Pretoria. Her research niche on yeast microbial interactions in indigenous fermented cereal foods. Nwabisa's research focuses on (i) preserving cultural knowledge on the production of fermented indigenous foods (ii) preserving of microbiota from South African indigenous fermented food products using culture independent and dependent techniques (iii) application of yeasts as adjunct starter cultures in the production of indigenous fermented foods which will assist in curbing nutrition transition in developing countries.
Nwabisa Mehlomakulu served as chair of MySAAFoST from 2021-2023 and was part of the organizing committee for SAAFoST 25th Biennial Congress in 2023. She further has experience as a mentor and facilitator of leadership workshops conducted by the Africa Science Leadership Programme.
